Final Call for new entrants - Coega’s Maths and Science Programme recruits new learners

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” Nelson Mandela. The famous quote by the late President encapsulates the CDC’s drive to recruit new learners as part of the Coega’s Maths & Science programme for the year 2019.

“We have been involved in the programme for a couple of years. This had led to increased numbers of new entrance over the years seeking to improve their subject marks in Maths & Science,” says Dr. Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC unit head brand, marketing & communications.

The CDC Maths & Science Programme enrolment period commenced 07 January 2019 and will be closing on 31 January 2019. The consideration criteria focuses on learners who have completed grade 12 and have passed all other subjects except mathematics & science.

“Learners need to bring their statement of symbols as well as a copy of their South African Identity Document. The programme classes commences in the month of February until November, daily from Monday to Friday 08h00 to 16h00,” stresses Eldon September, CDC Physical Science Facilitator.

All applications are submitted at the (front gate) Coega Human Capital Solutions (HCS), Zone 4 in the Coega SEZ, Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. “Due to the physical location of the classes, participation is limited to residents of the Nelson Mandela Bay,” says September.

In last year’s graduation, Dr. Muki Moeng, the Executive Dean of the faculty of Education at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) highlighted that the “key to success is to accept responsibility to realize [ones] dreams.”

“The Eastern Cape has traditionally performed the worst among the nine provinces in terms of the Matric pass rate. However, in 2018 we saw the largest improvement of 5.6% from 2017 matric results; Maths and Physical science seem to be the key subjects with a low performance in our region,” adds Dr. Vilakazi.

Bonginkosi Mthembu, CDC Executive Manager: Corporate Services highlights, “as mentioned last year, the program will be accommodating more learners this year, however only those who are committed to achieving their goals will be a part of the programme. We expect young people who are brave enough to grab opportunities of this nature to help groom them for what lies ahead.”
